On this month's show I have an ace guest mix from Jacob Kelly. Jacob Kelly is the Owner/A & R Manager of Eclectic Avenue Records (E.A.R.). Jacob has been collecting music since the late 1980’s and this shows in his ability to transcend all genres with his eclectic taste and mixes. Jacob is a producer as well as DJ and is well known in his previous guise as part-owner of Baker Street Recordings, one of the strongest underground house labels of the past 5 years. Jacob has released on Music For Freaks, Minority Music, 3am Recordings, Artizan, Baker Street Recordings, Bump Music, His own bootleg label Bulk, Paranoid Music, Getaway Music, Eclectic Avenue Records to name but a few. You may also recognise him as being responsible for one of the biggest House re edits released, J.Cub’s Lonely Club mix of Lil’ Louis’s Club Lonely. He has forthcoming releases in the bag for 2012 on Saints & Sonnets, Eclectic Avenue Records and Matt Tolfery’s Foot & Mouth label. In 2010, E.A.R. was born - a serious record label for serious music. March's show features a guest mix from the lovely Rob J of The Main Stem. Here is a bit of background about The Main Stem, nicked verbatim from their Facebook group. In May 2006 Birminghams own Robert Johnston (Rob J) was invited to play in his home city at the Soul Mekanik presents...'Bish Bash' party. Out of towner Ben (Shenton or Benny Upsetter) from Stafford took on his residential duties that night and this was to be a beautiful if not slightly Balearic friendship. At this point Ben had his first edit under his belt, an edit of Orlando Johnson and his trance. Rob J liked this (thumbs up!) and it wasn't too long after that, that the two started cooching up in a loft studio at 'The Building' studios in Stafford. Utilising Rob's deep knowledge of underground dance music and years of DJ experience coupled with Ben's production knowledge gained from years of playing with bands and sound college placements, the two set about making edits/reworks/original productions taking all their influences from anything like Steely Dan to Japan and from Arthur Russell to Herbie Hancock or indeed Cat Stevens to Bobby Goldsboro, to create anything they felt sounded 'right'. In the meantime both parties continued their DJ duties which have seen them playing alongside such jocks as Derrick Carter, Jazzy B, Todd Terje, Padded Cell, Lindstrom and Prins Thomas, Chicken Lips and so the list goes on, with each of these gigs being a great opportunity to try out new material. Fast forward a year (2007) and one more person had to enter the equation before 'The Main Stem' were fully formed, step forward Tim Silver, very much like Ben ,Tim also brought musicianship to the table but with an extra serving of engineering expertise that surpassed the rough, slapdash throw together techniques that Rob and Ben had been labouring for the last twelve months, the band was complete. Since then they have remixed Deadstock 33's (Justin Robertson) & Project Club on Is It Balearic. Released "Since you left" on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label (inc PT remix). 2011 is shaping up to be a great year for The Main Stem with a remix of Chicken Lips - "See fish" just having just dropped on Lip service (featured on this show before Rob's mix) & the following upcoming releases; MAIN STEM - COSMIC COUNTRY ON CLAREMONT 56. On this month's show I have a guest mix from Birmingham's Sam Redmore. Sam is the driving force behind the weekly club night Freestyle at the Bull's Head, Moseley. He DJs and promotes the night, as well as holding a residency for Leftfoot (currently celebrating its 10th Anniversary). Sam's sets at Freestyle are built around the musical ethos that anything goes, provided it has soul. This can range from funk, hip hop, reggae and soul through to house, disco, latin, afrobeat and rock - all get a look in. He plays music that he loves and tries to piece it together in a way that makes sense, re-editing and remixing much of the music himself in order to expand and complement what's already there. In the last few of years Sam has played at various parties and clubnights in the West Midlands and beyond, as well as the Garden Festival in Croatia, supporting artists including Roy Ayers, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Dreadzone, Hot 8 Brass Band, Gilles Peterson, Cash Money, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Akil The MC, Hexstatic and Omar, amongst many others.
